From scratch to snack: Students cook in class
Students in FACS and Foods classes rolled up their sleeves this week to make garlic cheese biscuits from scratch!
This fun, hands-on activity gave students the opportunity to explore basic culinary skills while learning about measurements, food safety, and kitchen teamwork. The aroma of freshly baked biscuits filled the classroom, and the results were as delicious as they were educational!
Activities like these are a perfect way to bring practical life skills into the classroom while keeping learning fun and engaging.

Garlic Cheese Biscuits
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 11–12 minutes
Total Time: 20–30 minutes
Yield: 12–15 biscuits
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1½ teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- ½ cup chilled stick butter (cubed)
- 1⅓ cups milk (you may not need it all)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 450°F.
- In a large bowl, mix all dry ingredients together.
- Cube the butter and add it to the flour mixture.
- Use a pastry blender to cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Slowly add milk, a little at a time, stirring between each addition.
- You may not need to use all the milk.
- Gently fold in the shredded cheese.
- Drop by rounded spoonful onto a baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 11–12 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
- Serve warm, clean up, and enjoy!
